You're right—that's not Vancouver, at least not exactly. Rather, it's a screenshot from a new urban planning tool developed by sustainable architecture firm Busby Perkins + Will in production with developer Concord Pacific. The interactive, skyscraping web app was developed to gather opinions from Vancouver residents about the future of their skyline, while educating them on the positive impacts of density.
Based on the notion that a denser downtown leads to a more efficient urban fabric, Shape Vancouver allows users to adjust building height (representing general density in addition to verticality), offering statistics on the savings in carbon use, energy consumption, infrastructure costs and automobile usage as they do so. In addition to being an educational tool, the poll results will contribute to an ongoing research project on the role of sustainability in the future of Vancouver's Zoning regulations. The amalgamated skyline and study findings will be circulated to Shape Vancouver participants sometime in the next few months.
