Scotland's design resurgence continues. Students from the Innovative Product Design course at Dundee's College of Art, Science and Engineering have created six new cell phone concepts. Rather than just "sexing up" existing phone forms, students took a more tactile and emotive approach, attempting to rethink the phone entirely.

The "Aware" model, for example, is worn as a necklace and sends tingles down your spine, literally, when a friend is in the vicinity. The "Hive" model goes aglow with LEDs when it senses other "Hives" nearby. The "Boom Tube" allows users to create music together over the network, even if they are not physically proximate.

"These new devices celebrate the essence of communication without drowning the user in rich media," says student Ian Shiels. "This exhibition is a revival in back-to-basics telecommunications, in a new, never-seen-before form."

"Our aim was to get away from the unsocial mobile phones that today's world is being taken over by," says student Sarah McMichael, "to learn to communicate and interact with each other on a new level." Click here for more info.
