BusinessWeek and the IDSA's International Design Excellence Awards remind us why we love ID so; the sheer breadth of products, not to mention the quality, encapsulated in this year's awards have something to wow even the most jaded design-head.
"This year's IDEA were judged during a scalding hot few days in May," says Helen Walters BusinessWeek's Innovation & Design Editor. "Despite the searing heat, jury members remained remarkably even-tempered, even when brawling over whether something was worthy of a gold, silver or bronze award. The judges immersed themselves in these projects, really getting to grips with the story behind each design. So while not every award was unanimous, each one was certainly agonized over."
Here we take a look at some of our favorite Bronze Award winners. Hit the jump for large shots and descriptions, or click here to wade through all 71. (Stay tuned for Silver and Gold.)

Metron 290 - Egg Design (South Korea)
The Metron 290 is a collection of seven design tools that help designers measure or analyze particular product design elements, such as checking embossments or patterns.
Transroller - Alto Design (Canada)
The Transroller is for handling heavy, cumbersome loads. For example, users can move things such as sheet materials in a safe manner and with significantly less effort than traditional methods. The clamping feature, essentially a gravity-activated clamp on wheels, allows the Transroller to secure its load in place.
Laser-Printed Dried Leaves - Tatil design (Brazil)
The invitation and flyer for the "Design Naturally" workshop at the 55th Cannes Advertising Festival was printed on an unusual type of paper: leaves. Laser engraving allows for the use of images of different complexity levels without leaving behind chemical residues. Designed with low environmental impact and showing great visual and sensory appeal, the leaves must be viewed against the light and can later be returned to nature.
Argus Bean Children's Digital Camera - TEAMS Design (U.S.)
The Bean is a rugged, affordable, and easy-to-use digital camera for children. It has only the controls and modes necessary for young users, yet boasts a 1.5-in. LCD display, 5 megapixel resolution, and USB connectivity/recharging. It easily clips onto clothes or a backpack, is water- and slip-resistant, and is ergonomically designed to fit children's hands.
Eva Solo Grating Bucket - Tools Design (Denmark)
The Eva Solo Grating Bucket turns the traditional handheld grater upside down. Everything you grate is captured in the grating bucket, preventing grated cheese and vegetables from being strewn all over the kitchen counter.
Twin Line - Duratex (Brazil)
Twin Line is a combination of faucet and filter that allows the same water source to be used for two distinct purposes. The two water outlets have hinged fittings. By turning the lever to one side, the faucet is turned on while the filter is activated by displacing the lever to the opposite side. The water is filtered through an innovative carbon block system that reduces chlorine taste and odors and removes particulate matter.
Quara Hanger - No Design (Brazil)
This hanger prevents laundered clothes from sliding down the clothes line, providing space optimization while avoiding hanger marks. It ensures adequate drying of all kinds of garments and reduces ironing time.
IN newspaper
Bronze Award Category: Student Designs - Seon-Keun Park, Byung-Min Woo, Samsung Art & Design Institute (South Korea)
IN is a new kind of newspaper that combines a flexible display and Wi-Fi technology. Place the device in its cradle before bed, set the embedded alarm, and wake up to an updated feed of news.
Fire Relief Respirator - Pengtao Yu, Art Center College of Design (U.S.)
Smoke inhalation is the No. 1 cause of death from fire. The Fire Relief Respirator provides oxygen to people who are trapped in a fire. It enables them to breathe for a longer time before they are rescued, increasing their chance of survival. It can be used in residences, hotels, offices, and high-rise buildings.
eROCKIT - Kostantinos Heyer, Thomas Weinhold, ErockIT (U.S.)
The eROCKIT is an electric motorcycle that is driven like a bicycle. The driver's pedaling motions charge the batteries and control the motor, which multiplies the rider's effort by a factor of 50. The faster you pedal, the faster the 12 horsepower electric motor rotates. The high torque of the electric motor enables spectacular acceleration.
