Honda Designs Cell Phone Airbag Protection System! (Okay, Not Really)

In 2010 we put out a call for entries seeking ID renderings of a cell phone airbag concept. Exactly zero of you responded (though six people left comments; most folks like to critique more than they like to do). In 2011 we discovered Apple had actually patented an airbag-like cell phone protection system. And this week, I became excited upon seeing links popping up to an airbag cell phone case supposedly developed by Honda.

Alas, it's a gag. A well-done gag, but you don't have to be able to speak Japanese to understand the tone of the following video. It's a clever bit of marketing done to promote the safety features of Honda's N-WGN kei car.

Not good. Device should be smaller, to look like just simple case. It should will not work alone but in addition to the software connected with internal instruments (gyro) which will read physical status of device - position in space so, the gravitational facts (not altitude with GPS because it is immeasurable on a small scale). And in that case, if you just, let's say, play with device, throwing it up and trying to catch it (just for fun), it is assumable it will drop off from your hands, because you are not magician. In that case, mechanism will be ready to activate itself. Said, ready bot not yet activate. Initial trigger will be. for inst. two armband with sensors which will communicate with phone too , measuring distance on small scale from the device. If its to far (f.inst. more than 20 cm) than it will activate itself (but respecting first condition - to be rolled through the space). This example shows maybe future improvements.
