NYC cops are "New York's Finest," the Fire Department is "New York's Bravest," and Corrections Officers are called "New York's Boldest."
Do you know what they call the garbagemen here? "New York's Strongest."
If that sounds weird to you, you've probably never been around at two in the morning when the truck pulls up to each corner and a burly guy grabs the can and up-ends it into the back of the truck. It's not easy work, garbage is heavy, and you'll never see a skinny sanitation worker getting sand kicked into his face at Jones Beach.
So I was tickled to see Swiss company Burri AG's Public Bin Waste Management System, which is essentially a pole-mounted garbage can with a freaking gas shock on the back.
The garbageman unlocks the can with a key and the weight of the can tips it forward--gently, due to the shock--making for easy removal of the bag within. It was even designed with an elevated interior handle for grabbing by hands wearing thick work gloves.
Now if only we could get these installed in NYC, and then our sanitation workers could be "New York's Neatest."
