Man this is cool. To make a cell phone so durable no protective case is required, HTC has started messing with some esoteric production methods. "Micro arc oxidation" is an eletrochemical process whereby a piece of aluminum is zapped with 10,000 volts, transforming the surface into a ceramic-like surface. Boring to read about, but wicked to watch:

Also you should be praising a company that is designing a cell phone that can handle normal abuse unlike Apple which has a fragile piece of glass that needs to be coddled. That opens up an entire new industry of garbage cases....
I want you to imagine how many cases are currently on store shelves.. in 3 years and every piece sold thereafter will be in a dump and will never degrade..
