John Maeda is a graphic designer, artist, technologist, teacher and author. His latest book, The Laws of Simplicity, should be standard issue for designers (makes a great gift too!), and running at exactly 100 pages, outlines very specific strategies for simplifying design and experience. At next week's Design 2.0 Panel Discussion event, John will talk about the genesis of the book and delve into a few of the strategies. But we'll also bug him to talk about what didn't make it into the book. Vessel should have a bunch of copies for sale, so bring your Sharpie (also standard issue for designers) and corral John to pen some graphic gravitas on your inside cover. Here's a snippet from the book:
When I had once lost all interest in teaching some years ago, I was visiting [Wolfgang] Weingart in Maine to give a lecture for his then regular summer course. I marveled at Weingart's ability to give the exact same introductory lecture each year. I thought to myself, "Doesn't he get bored?" Saying the same thing over and over has no value in my mind. Yet it was on maybe the third visit that I realized that although Weingart was saying the exact same thing, he was saying it simpler each time he said it. Through focusing on the basics of basics, he was able to reduce everything that he knew to the essence of what he wished to convey.
Not sure how long John's been on the book tour, but those parts should be pretty darn succinct!
