Brooklyn-based artist & graphic designer Scott Albrecht will be exhibiting new works on paper and wood at the end of the month, when the exhibition ALONG THE WAY opens at Philadelphia's Trick Go gallery in two weeks.

Albrecht continues his practice of hand-lettered typography and drawings on 'found' substrates. And why not? It makes for a winsome combination, if I say so myself. A graphic designer's sense of geometry also figures into his work, in terms of the patterns, shapes and layouts.

Conversely, by adding a graphic element to a canvas—salvaged wood or 'found' paper—Albrecht fabricates a new meaning to the otherwise mute history of the underlying surface.

Moment in Time - 02/07/2002

While many of the pieces simply pick up where his previous works left off, Albrecht is also moving towards more conceptual abstract work, as in the new Moment in Time series (above and below), four works in which significant dates are rendered as opaque triangular tiles.In ALONG THE WAY, Albrecht focused on capturing specific moments from his life, especially memories of events in which he found inspiration and discovery. These moments are represented thematically throughout the exhibition and specifically documented in a series of four works called Moments in Time. Expanding upon his signature typographic aesthetic, Albrecht explores abstract interpretations of typography in his Moments in Time series. In each of the four works, the artist integrates a set of eight numbers which represent a significant date (mm/dd/yyyy), dissects the numerical letterforms into a system of painted wooden geometric shapes, and embeds hidden codes into the resulting puzzle-like pattern.

While some might dismiss these mash-ups as contrived, I, for one, appreciate Albrecht's humble aesthetic and the handsome (and—dare I say it—organic) execution of the work... though I don't think he needs to put it into writing:
