The Central Plaza was buzzing today at CES. Impressive inflatable structures housed the likes of Nokia, Microsoft, and AOL, attracting hordes of visitors.Nokia's tent focused on the "computer done beautifully," emphasizing the interconnectivity of their cell phones. The N76 was the star of the tent, offering everything from hi-quality digital sound with 2GB of memory, to podcasting downloads. Sadly, this model is not available in the US yet. I was also told that Nokia is considering creating a total podcasting solution that might include built-in audio-editing software. Fingers crossed -- we'll just have to wait and see! Or hear.
Microsoft tapped into the total-entertainment lifestyle by partnering with Dresser Wayne. Their Ovation2 iX is the second generation of one-stop-gas-station-cum-music-center. Complete with a new 15" touch screen, this gas pump offers wireless connection with your personal wi-fi-enabled device. Dad can now pump gas while the kids download music. Companies like Sam's Club and Home Depot have already implemented the Ovation1 with great success. They look forward to the new model reaching equal success.
Down the road Visteon displayed a variety of super smart wireless chargers. When a device is placed on the paper-thin surface, electromagnetic induction recharges it without the hassle of cords. They're in talks with Herman Miller to possibly implement these smart surfaces in desks and office furniture.
Finally, a big salut goes out to Solarfair from Wheeling, IL. These guys solar-powered an entire sound stage, amps, and flat-screen TV for our enjoyment. In a city of lights, cameras, and action, it's nice to catch a glimpse of green.
