  I think this is innovative due to the minimal use of materials as well as minimal energy required to manufacture the boat.

  The boat they designed shares little in common with the boats mentioned in these comments other than the fact that it folds - and the designers don't seem to have claimed they invented that idea. The interesting thing about this design is that it was mostly produced from a single sheet of plastic, which means it would be manufactured much cheaper than porta-bote, parkboats, instaboat, etc.

  I wonder if these fellows have heard of the Porta-Bote or the Folbot, which has been in production since the 1930's...

  How many people does it transport after you unfold it and put it in the water?
  
  I like how when unfolded it only has two dimensions. How does that work? Wouldn't that make it difficult to stay afloat?
