When first walking into the exhibition space, one encounters a mysterious, optically-fuzzy, impressively colorful, wedding dress. Upon closer inspection, the dress is composed of small seemingly-floating, wildly colorful round spokes. Emmanuelle Moureaux is a Tokyo-based architect who visits Design Tide each year, with a keen eye for evolving architectural design.

The title of the piece, "Toge," means 'thorn' in Japanese. Each individual block is composed of a small metal ball, with a net of long, thin pine-needles, made of piano wire, and painted with a glossy paint. Moureaux says that the design for "Toge" marks the latest evolution of her exhibition pieces.

Since she spends the rest of the year creating designs specifically to meet client requests, she enjoys experimenting with new concepts, and advancing key elements of her design portfolio during design events. The inspiration for the Toge pieces was a merging of the colorful carbon-based branches that she put on display last year, and some dandelion-inspired 2D wall-decals that she had designed for the Rainbow mille-feuille building that she had designed and built for the Sugamo Shinkin Bank, in Shimura, Tokyo in March of this year. Each year, her exhibition works show a creative rethinking of design features that she applied in her architectural works, and following each exhibit, past ideas are often incorporated in her future designs as well.

The "Toge" pieces were designed to be assembled freely, and could be used for making free-standing sculptural pieces, or architectural features, such as walls or partitions. The Toge wedding dress itself is composed of precisely 500 of the Toge spheres. Emmanuelle says that in "all of [her] works, she thinks deeply about the hue and effect of each of the colors she uses." The "Toge" dress is composed with the 15 particular colors in hues that frequently appear in her own architectural pieces.

In her recent architectural designs, she's begun featuring elements using thin linear lines, and she's not sure how the Toge feature will evolve next, but will be glad to show us her next incarnation during next year's Design Tide as well.
