In honor of the University of Applied Arts Vienna's acquisition of visionary design educator Victor J. Papanek's archive, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) launched the Design for the Real World REDUX competition. Established and emerging designers are invited to submit innovative and radical examples of ecologically responsible and/or socially responsive designs that address everyday problems or social needs in the spirit of Victor J. Papanek's philosophy.

Written forty years ago, Design for the Real World laid out the tenets for social design "by asking practitioners to see their field in a larger context," explains David Revere McFadden, Chief Curator at MAD. "For him, designers must take responsibility for the impact that their creations can have on the quality of life of individuals and societies." A pioneer in advocating for a more human, ecologically and ethically centered design practice, Papanek was trained in architecture and design, a practicing industrial designer and an avid anthropologist spending time in communities including Navajo, Inuit, and Balinese. The distinguished jury represents leaders in the field including Stefan Sagmeister, Fiona Raby, John Thackara and our very own Allan Chochinov!
