Why Is Core77 Protesting SOPA and PIPA?

Core77 joins a growing community of websites and organizations on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act and Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act, commonly referred to as SOPA and PROTECT IP/PIPA, by taking down or blocking our own sites to protest these pieces of legislation. Today, we join sites from Reddit to Wikipedia to Internet Archive to Rhizome to the entire Cheezburger Network and more, to voluntarily black out our sites because we believe this legislation is harmful to the expression and free exchange of ideas and information we value most about the Internet. These bills allow for the creation of "blacklists" and would promote broad censorship of sites and content in the name of protecting property and creating accountability. They would also directly impact Core77, Inc by reducing the "safe harbor" and other protections critical for sites hosting user generated content such as Coroflot, Design Directory and our discussion boards, as well as preventing access to many of the international sites we read daily to keep up with the world's design news.
